DESGC Undergraduate Summer Research Internships

(Application deadline: May 20, 2026)

This program provides summer stipends of up to $6,000 to undergraduates in the fields of science, technology, engineering, math, and geography who are currently enrolled at a University of Delaware, Delaware State University, Wilmington University, Delaware Technical Community College, Villanova University, or Swarthmore College.  Recipients must be US Citizens.  Students will work on a research project with a faculty mentor at the institution they attend or at any DESGC affiliate institution.

Internships generally run June, July, and August with an expectation of 10 full time weeks which may be scheduled and divided as agreed by the mentor and student. Students will be asked to complete a short worksheet at the end to describe their experience. We also ask students to attend and present their work at our annual Research Symposium in April the following year.

Preference will be given to students with faculty advisors who have already agreed to mentor and can provide some matching funds as a portion of the student’s stipend. Students who have not identified a mentor are still encouraged to apply, and we love to see first time researchers joining the program! We will work to match as many students as possible within the limitations of our budget.

Application Instructions:
1. All applications must be entered through the NASA STEM Gateway system by creating and logging in to a Gateway student profile.
2. Your response to the essay question “In no more than 300 words, state why you are interested in this NASA experience.” should include the areas of research that interest you. If you already have a research mentor, please provide us with their name and contact information. If you don’t yet have a mentor, just let us know what kind of research you might want to do and where. In the past we have supported undergraduate research at University of Delaware, Delaware State University, Wilmington University, and Villanova University.
3. After you apply, please watch for any emails from our program manager, Angie Miller (milleras@udel.edu) requesting additional information.
